Why do we pay for the internet?

Why do we pay for the internet?
What are they actually selling?

First of all, what is the internet?

Simply put, the Internet is a computer network that connects all the computers in the world. However, in a little more detail - some computers are connected to each other to form a computer network. In this way, most of the computers in the world are connected to each other, the network of computer networks that we have created is called the Internet, and computers exchange data with each other through an authentic system called IP or Internet Protocol.

This means that if the computer or mobile device in our home is connected to this computer network (Internet), we will be able to exchange data with other computers connected to the network through IP or Internet Protocol.

How does the internetwork?

If you ask someone how the internet works, many will say that the internet works with the help of satellites in space or they will say they don't know. But 99% of the internet goes through optical cable and only 1% goes through satellite.

Now maybe that's what you're thinking in your mind, "Kisab is saying wrong! I am using the internet on my mobile without any connection. ” Honestly, there is an optical fiber cable laid from the tower through which the internet network is coming to your mobile to the server of the website you are visiting. Feeling weird? Then I say in a simple way.

The information that comes to us from the internet comes through 3 different levels. These layers are called Tier. These 3 levels are Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3.

Tier 1

Tier 1 is the company that has laid cables all over the world at sea with its own money (called optical fiber cable or submarine cable). Cables are as thin as hair but they can transmit data as fast as 100 to 200 Gbps. There are different Tier 1 companies in different countries who have connected the whole world by spreading cables from one country to another. Thus there is a landing point of optical fiber cable at one end of a country (you can see the map of submarine cable in the world if you wish.) Bangladesh Tier 1 Company is Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited). Now from the landing point, the country (in the case of Bangladesh) in different districts and districts in different Upazilas, Tier 2, and Tier 3, these 2 levels, the Internet reaches your locality.

Tier 2

Tier 1 Company brings fiber cables to the coastal areas of the country. Then various companies in that country like Grameenphone, Banglalink, etc. in Bangladesh take the connection from the cable of the Tier 1 company and pay a certain amount of money per GB to Tier 1 company. So these Grameenphone, Banglalink, etc. companies are Tier 2 companies.

Tier 3

There are some area-based ISPs or Internet Service Providers called Tier 3 companies. They provide area-based services.

World travel on the Internet

If you wish, you can see from your computer, if you visit a website, how many countries you have to go to the server of that website. For this, you need to open the CMD of your computer. Then type tracert and give a link to the website with space. Then different IPs can be seen.

If you check these IPs on this website, you will see how many countries you have to connect to go to its server. This is how the internet works all over the world.

Who owns the Internet?

There is actually no owner of the internet. Different companies lay optical fiber cable or submarine cable in the sea with their own money.

What is the cost of the internet?

Suppose you have a computer in your office. You also have a computer at home. You have now connected a cable to these two computers. Then you connected the Internet to your two computers. Yes, this is the internet. In short, the whole process is Mobile / Computer → Network Operator [Banglalink, Grameen, Robi, etc. or Broadband] → Submarine Cable [You can say USB Cable] Computer on the other end.

In fact, the Internet is free. So why do we pay for the internet? We basically give the money to those who have the cable to provide internet connection and those who have to operate it. However, the company takes from us several times more money than what is needed.
